What Is the Body Scan?

The body scan is one of the foundational practices of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and many other mindfulness programmes, and for many people it becomes the most important and personally meaningful part of their practice. It involves systematically moving attention through the body, from feet to head, attending to each area in turn with gentle, curious awareness - noticing sensation without trying to change it, and simply observing whatever is present.

The practice is typically done lying down, which makes it particularly accessible for those who find sitting uncomfortable or who want a practice they can do in bed before sleep. It lasts anywhere from ten to forty-five minutes, though even a brief ten-minute body scan can provide significant benefit for those short on time.

How the Body Scan Works

As you move your attention through each area of the body - toes, feet, ankles, calves, and so progressively upward - you practise two things simultaneously: the deliberate direction of attention to a chosen focus, and the quality of open, non-judgmental awareness that is the hallmark of mindfulness. When you notice that attention has wandered, you gently return it to where you intended it to be.

The instruction to observe sensation without trying to change it is important. We are not trying to relax the body by force of will, nor are we trying to achieve any particular state. We are simply attending, with gentle, interested curiosity, to whatever is actually present. Paradoxically - and this is one of the characteristic paradoxes of mindfulness - this quality of non-striving attention often produces very deep relaxation as a natural consequence.

Benefits of Regular Body Scan Practice

Regular body scan practice delivers a range of well-documented benefits. Physical tension that has been chronically held without awareness is often released as it receives conscious attention. Chronic pain, approached with the curious, accepting awareness of the body scan, often becomes more manageable. Sleep quality - a frequent beneficiary of all mindfulness practices - tends to improve significantly with regular evening body scan practice.

Beyond these measurable effects, the body scan gradually builds a more intimate, respectful relationship with one's own physical being. In a culture that treats the body primarily as an instrument of productivity or an object of appearance, this quality of gentle, appreciative attention to the body's lived experience is genuinely restorative.

A Simple Guide to Getting Started

Lie down comfortably on your back, arms at your sides, eyes closed. Take three deep breaths to settle. Then bring your attention to the toes of your left foot. Simply notice any sensation that is present - temperature, tingling, pressure, or perhaps nothing particularly distinct. Breathe into this area if that feels helpful. After a minute or so, move your attention to the sole of the foot, the heel, the ankle, and so on upward through the body.

When you reach the top of your head, you might let awareness expand to take in the whole body at once, breathing with the entire body as a unified whole. Lie still for a moment before gradually returning to full waking awareness. This practice, done consistently, will change your relationship with your body and your capacity for physical rest and recovery.
